Nordic Pharma has launched Lacrifill, a canalicular gel therapy for dry eye, across European markets following CE mark approval in 2025. The treatment is now available to healthcare professionals and patients and aims to support ocular surface optimisation, particularly for those undergoing surgical procedures.
Lacrifill is a cross-linked hyaluronic acid gel that temporarily blocks tear drainage by physiologically occluding the canalicular system. By preserving the tear film, the gel maintains natural lubrication on the ocular surface. The in-office procedure delivers a full fill of the canalicular system with effects lasting up to six months.
Dry eye disease affects up to 30% of the European population and presents particular challenges for patients undergoing cataract or LASIK surgery, where preexisting ocular surface disease can impact outcomes and patient satisfaction.
Professor Jose Benitez del Castillo (Complutense University of Madrid, Spain) said: “Achieving a stable ocular surface is a vital prerequisite for successful surgical outcomes. The introduction of Lacrifill to the European market is a welcome development, providing us with a new tool for pre-and post-operative ocular surface health optimisation and ensuring our patients have access to the latest advancements in ocular care.”
Charlotte Phelps, ceo of Nordic Group B.V., said: “The European launch of Lacrifill represents a significant milestone for Nordic Pharma. We are proud to bring this innovative dry eye therapy to patients and healthcare professionals across Europe, and we believe it will help many of those currently living with dry eye disease and become an important addition to dry eye management, particularly around ocular surgery.”
Nordic Pharma said it will support the launch with ongoing medical education initiatives, working closely with the ophthalmology community to improve standards in ocular surface optimisation.
