Innovative Molecules adds Epstein-Barr virus antiviral programme to pipeline

Innovative Molecules has expanded its virology pipeline with a new antiviral programme targeting Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), with plans to advance candidates into Phase 1 development in 2027.

The Munich-based biotechnology company said the programme comprises directly acting polymerase inhibitors designed to target EBV, a herpesvirus linked to conditions including lymphoproliferative disorders, transplant-related complications and some autoimmune diseases.

The company said approved targeted antiviral treatment options for EBV remain limited and that the programme is intended to strengthen its portfolio of therapies for herpesvirus-associated diseases.

Florian Vogel, chief executive officer of Innovative Molecules, said: “EBV is an increasingly important therapeutic area with substantial medical need, while growing momentum in both scientific research and therapeutic development.”

He added: “The addition of this program marks an important step in the continued expansion of our antiviral pipeline and reinforces our commitment to advancing innovative therapeutic approaches for serious viral diseases.”

The new programme complements the company’s existing antiviral portfolio, which includes lead candidate adibelivir (IM-250), a selective helicase-primase inhibitor under development for herpes simplex virus-mediated diseases.

Innovative Molecules said it is continuing to build a focused pipeline of antiviral therapies aimed at diseases where treatment options remain limited, with the EBV programme representing its latest addition ahead of planned clinical development.
