Tjoapack expands oral solid dose bottle packaging capacity at Netherlands facility

Tjoapack is expanding its oral solid dose bottle packaging capabilities at its Etten-Leur facility in the Netherlands with the installation of a second production line.

The contract packaging organisation said the new line, a Cremer Uhlmann IBC 50 system, will increase capacity and flexibility for pharmaceutical customers requiring compliant bottle packaging solutions. The investment is intended to support growing demand for oral solid dose medicines and more adaptable packaging configurations.

The IBC 50 line automates bottle packaging and can process a wide range of bottle shapes at speeds of up to 50 bottles per minute. According to Tjoapack, the system is fully compliant with good manufacturing practice requirements and offers multiple packaging formats within a single production setup.

The line allows bottles to be packed into cartons with a leaflet, combined with a booklet using a topserter, or wrapped in plastic using a shrink tunnel. Tjoapack said this flexibility will enable customers to select packaging formats aligned with regulatory, market and product-specific requirements without the need for multiple production lines.

The expansion comes amid continued growth in the pharmaceutical bottle packaging market, driven by increased volumes of oral solid dose products and rising expectations around compliance, efficiency and adaptability in secondary packaging operations.

Geert Vleugels, general manager of Tjoapack Netherlands, said the investment supports the company’s focus on operational performance and customer needs. He said: “This investment reflects our continued focus on flexibility and operational excellence.” He added: “By introducing a line that supports multiple packaging configurations, we can better align our services with the diverse needs of our customers while maintaining the highest GMP standards.”

Tjoapack said the addition of the IBC 50 line will also help streamline operations at the Etten-Leur site. The ability to switch between different packaging configurations on a single line is expected to improve efficiency and reduce changeover times, supporting faster product release and improved responsiveness to customer demand.

Vleugels said the new system will allow the site to adapt as customer portfolios evolve. He added: “The flexibility this new line offers enables us to offer tailored solutions using a single, efficient setup, supporting our customers as their products and requirements evolve.”

The Etten-Leur expansion forms part of a broader programme of infrastructure and technology investment across Tjoapack’s network. The company said these efforts are focused on strengthening service capabilities while ensuring consistent quality, compliance and supply reliability for pharmaceutical partners.

In addition to oral solid dose packaging, Tjoapack has recently invested in expanding cold chain and injectable packaging capabilities in both the United States and the Netherlands. These initiatives are aimed at addressing growing demand for biologics and temperature-sensitive therapies, where specialised handling and packaging controls are required.

By increasing bottle packaging capacity at its Netherlands facility, Tjoapack said it is positioning itself to support pharmaceutical companies as they scale production, manage portfolio complexity and navigate evolving regulatory and market requirements.
