Gifthealth’s CEO on reimagining pharmacy access: From prescription to patient in a frictionless future

Last Updated: 5 May 2026By

With nearly 30 years of experience across pharma, precision medicine, and payer innovation, Chip Parkinson knows the healthcare system inside out. Now, as president of Gifthealth, he’s on a mission to transform pharmacy access in the US—making it faster, fairer, and far more personal.

Discover Pharma sat down with him to explore how the company plans to scale, the role of AI in medication access, and why the pharmacy of the future might be closer than we think.

What attracted you to Gifthealth, and how does this role align with your broader mission in healthcare innovation?

I’ll never forget the first time I walked into a patient waiting room as a new sales rep at Pfizer—seeing the concern on people’s faces brought home just how critical access to care is. Since that moment nearly 30 years ago, I’ve stayed focused on helping people get and stay on the medications they need. That mission is central to Gifthealth’s approach: simplifying and personalizing pharmacy access. With my background spanning pharma, personalized medicine, and payer innovation, this role allows me to apply all those experiences to transform pharmacy into a proactive, tech-enabled service that addresses access gaps and improves adherence.

What is your strategic vision for Gifthealth over the next 12–24 months?

We’re addressing persistent challenges in the pharmacy space: one-third of patients never fill their prescriptions, adherence remains poor, and satisfaction with pharmacy services is low. Our plan is to scale nationally, deepen integration with providers, and expand partnerships with employers and payers. We’re also working on specialty and traditional brand access, building an adherence platform powered by data, and using AI to deliver more personalized patient support.

How do you define success for a digital pharmacy platform like Gifthealth?

Success means tangible improvements in medication access, adherence, and patient satisfaction—not just for complex therapies but across widely used drug categories. Operationally, we measure success by how much we can reduce administrative burden for providers, cut delays in therapy initiation, and improve outcomes without inflating costs. In the U.S., we’re fortunate to see over 50 new drug approvals each year. Patients deserve timely access to those innovations, free of unnecessary hurdles.

How does Gifthealth differentiate itself from traditional PBMs and digital health startups?

We eliminate much of the friction created by traditional pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) by integrating directly with prescribers and using automation to match patients with affordable fill options. Our model is built on transparency and engagement—without hidden rebates or complex formularies. Studies show that engaged patients have better outcomes, and that’s our north star: making pharmacy a meaningful and even empowering part of the care journey.

What are the key growth opportunities in pharmacy access, and how is Gifthealth positioned to lead?

There’s tremendous potential in streamlining prior authorizations, accelerating delivery times, and integrating pharmacy access into telehealth and chronic care. Gifthealth’s tech-first, human-touch approach—alongside our end-to-end coordination—makes us well-positioned to serve high-volume therapeutic areas and evolve with market needs.

What’s the plan for national expansion and entry into new segments such as specialty pharmacy or employer-based models?

We’re actively pursuing partnerships with payers, employers, and specialty service providers. Our white-label model allows us to integrate into existing systems—whether that’s a health system’s infrastructure or a coalition of employers focused on pharmacy benefit redesign. This will help us scale geographically and reach new verticals efficiently.

How is Gifthealth using AI and automation to streamline prescription fulfillment?

We leverage AI to predict refill needs, automate prior authorizations, and route prescriptions intelligently across our pharmacy network. Our scripting engine reduces manual input errors, speeds up fulfillment, and enables faster time-to-therapy. For manufacturer-directed programs, our mail order pharmacy uses automation to achieve delivery times under 24 hours for most patients.

What role do data and analytics play in personalizing the pharmacy experience?

Data allows us to segment patients based on risk and identify potential barriers to adherence. Providers get insights into where patients may be struggling, and we can intervene before it impacts health outcomes. Turning pharmacy data into actionable insights is a cornerstone of our platform.

How does Gifthealth tangibly address affordability and access?

By routing prescriptions through a dynamic network of pharmacies, applying available discounts, and engaging directly with patients, we help lower out-of-pocket costs. Our platform ensures prescriptions are not just written, but routed to real, fillable, affordable options.

Are there initiatives underway to support underserved or high-need populations?

Yes, we’re building partnerships with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and Medicaid plans to reach rural and low-income communities. We’re also piloting culturally competent engagement tools and simplified medication delivery services in high-need ZIP codes.

How would you describe your leadership style, and how are you shaping Gifthealth’s internal culture?

My style is collaborative, data-driven, and anchored in purpose. I believe in clear KPIs, inclusion, and creating space for experimentation—especially important when you’re scaling in a space as complex as pharmacy. At Gifthealth, we’re building a culture where people feel empowered to solve real problems that matter to patients.

What key lessons from your time at Pfizer, Myriad, and Cambia will you apply here?

Pfizer taught me how to scale within regulatory frameworks. At Myriad, I saw the power of personalizing care. Cambia sharpened my skills in payer-provider collaboration. All of these experiences are vital as we build a pharmacy model that integrates with the broader healthcare system and supports value-based care.

What disruptions do you anticipate in pharmacy over the next 5–10 years, and how is Gifthealth preparing?

The biggest disruption will be pharmacy-as-a-service—embedding access into digital care flows and logistics. Gifthealth is investing in the infrastructure to support this, from tech-enabled fulfillment and predictive analytics to real-time integrations with prescribers and payers. Making access seamless across the patient-provider-pharmacy continuum may not sound disruptive, but it will change everything.

How will digital pharmacy evolve as part of value-based care and integrated delivery models?

Digital pharmacy will become a vital tool for closing care gaps, driving adherence, and reducing avoidable costs. It’s the connective tissue between clinical care, patient behavior, and medication access. At its best, pharmacy can enable better health—something people can’t live fully without. That’s the value we aim to deliver.
