Thermo Fisher partners with AstraZeneca BioVentureHub in Gothenburg

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s PPD clinical research business has entered into a research and development partnership with AstraZeneca BioVentureHub in Gothenburg, Sweden. The collaboration will see scientists from Thermo Fisher co-located with AstraZeneca researchers to work on joint projects, with an initial focus on chromatography, molecular genomics and proteomics.

The move places Thermo Fisher inside AstraZeneca’s innovation hub, which supports collaborations between large pharmaceutical companies, smaller biotech ventures and academic groups. According to the companies, the partnership aims to create opportunities for shared projects and easier access to specialist technologies.

Leon Wyszkowski, president of analytical services, clinical research at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said: “This is a unique opportunity to co-locate with AstraZeneca scientists, driving collaborative innovation and giving easy access to technologies for emerging life sciences and biotech companies as well as academic groups.”

Magnus Björsne, chief executive of AstraZeneca BioVentureHub, added: “Welcoming Thermo Fisher Scientific into BioVentureHub at AstraZeneca’s R&D campus in Gothenburg marks a significant step and unlocks opportunities for open scientific co-creation between AstraZeneca and Thermo Fisher Scientific.”

The BioVentureHub is located within AstraZeneca’s Gothenburg R&D campus and sits next to GoCo Health Innovation City, which is being developed as a wider cluster for life sciences companies. Thermo Fisher is also building a bioanalytical laboratory in the GoCo area, scheduled to open in March 2026. Once operational, the site will provide services for pharmaceutical and biotech companies across Europe.

The company already runs a global network of laboratories supporting drug development, including facilities in Ireland, Belgium, Singapore, China and the United States. The new Swedish site will add to that network, offering bioanalytical capabilities to support pharmaceutical programmes through different stages of development.

The partnership with AstraZeneca follows a series of collaborations designed to connect research organisations with access to Thermo Fisher’s technologies, while giving the company a stronger presence in key global hubs for drug discovery and development.

Discover Pharma is looking forward to attending Nordic Life Sciences from October 12–15 where this news will be shared further.
