Colorcon expands global supply network with new pharmaceutical film coating facility in Malaysia

Colorcon has officially opened a new pharmaceutical film coating manufacturing facility in Johor, Malaysia, as part of its strategy to enhance supply chain resilience and meet growing regional demand in Asia Pacific. The site marks the company’s seventh major film coating plant and 16th manufacturing facility globally.

Colorcon has announced the opening of a new 200,000 square-foot manufacturing plant in Johor, Malaysia. The facility is designed to serve as a regional production hub for pharmaceutical film coatings across Asia Pacific, supporting both global supply resilience and regional demand growth.

The new site, which immediately employs 30 people, incorporates advanced manufacturing technologies and energy-efficient systems. According to the company, the facility reflects its commitment to innovation, environmental sustainability, and regulatory excellence across its global manufacturing footprint.

“We are thrilled to open this world-class facility to support our pharmaceutical customers throughout Asia,” said Simon Tasker, CEO of Colorcon. “This investment is aligned with our long-term vision to strengthen and de-risk our supply model for film coatings worldwide. Our goal is to anticipate market growth, adding capacity to ensure we are always a step ahead of demand.”

Colorcon said the Malaysia facility is part of a broader pipeline of global development projects intended to improve product access and manufacturing flexibility.

Willem Hoogwater, Managing Director at Colorcon, added: “This is a monumental achievement for the local team, and I commend everyone who has played a part in bringing this facility to completion. Malaysia has quickly become an important hub for high-value pharmaceutical manufacturing, and we’re proud to support the local economy with an investment like this.”

Founded in 1961, Colorcon has built its reputation on innovation in film coating systems and specialty excipients. Its launch of the Opadry range in 1980 introduced one of the first complete film coating systems to the market, simplifying tablet coating processes and improving manufacturing reliability. The Opadry portfolio has since expanded to address challenges such as taste-masking, moisture protection, swallowability, and regulatory compliance.

With the new Johor site now operational, Colorcon aims to serve its Asia Pacific customers more efficiently while reinforcing global continuity of supply across its core product lines.
