New partnership aims to tackle European shortages of key oncology drugs

Bionical Emas has signed an exclusive global clinical trial supply agreement with Germany-based Pharma Resources GmbH to address ongoing shortages of essential oncology injectables in Europe, including Fluorouracil.

The partnership grants Bionical Emas the exclusive rights to distribute Pharma Resources’ EU-marketed oncology portfolio for use in clinical research worldwide. The agreement marks Pharma Resources’ first formal entry into the clinical trial supply market and reflects rising pressure on drug availability across the region.

Fluorouracil, a widely used chemotherapy agent, is currently in short supply across multiple European countries. The disruption is affecting both standard cancer care and the conduct of clinical trials, where consistent access to comparator and rescue medications is critical. The partnership aims to mitigate these risks by streamlining the supply of authorised oncology injectables through Bionical Emas’ established logistics network and global infrastructure.

Clinical trial sponsors and contract research organisations (CROs) have reported growing concern over delayed timelines and increased costs due to drug shortages. According to Bionical Emas, its distribution model is designed to reduce lead times from several months to a matter of weeks. The company will use advanced demand forecasting and real-time inventory management to improve the reliability of trial supply chains and help sites respond more flexibly to patient enrolment demands.

Pharma Resources holds European marketing authorisations for its oncology injectables, which allows them to be used as commercial comparators in global clinical studies. Under the new agreement, Bionical Emas will oversee supply chain operations, regulatory compliance, and delivery coordination across trial networks.

“Drug shortages are a major barrier to clinical trial execution, especially in oncology where continuity of care and protocol adherence are vital,” said Tom White, Senior Vice-President of Strategic Alliances at Bionical Emas. “This agreement with Pharma Resources supports investigators and trial sponsors by improving access to key treatments at a time of increasing need.”

Juliana Dodillet, managing director of Pharma Resources, added: “We recognise the urgency of the situation. By working with Bionical Emas, we are able to bring our products into the clinical research environment efficiently and support the development of therapies that rely on comparator availability.”

The agreement is expected to have immediate impact on access to oncology injectables for clinical trial sites already facing delays linked to ongoing supply constraints.
