Piramal Pharma takes controlling stake in Yapan Bio
Piramal Pharma has completed the acquisition of an additional 40.67% stake in Yapan Bio, taking its ownership of the biologics CDMO to 74%.
Yapan Bio becomes Piramal subsidiary
Piramal Pharma has paid ₹76 crore ($7.95 million) for the additional stake in Hyderabad-based Yapan Bio, which provides process development, characterisation and Phase 1 and Phase 2 GMP manufacturing services for vaccines and biologics.
The transaction was completed on August 18 and changes Yapan Bio’s status from an associate company of Piramal Pharma to a subsidiary.
Piramal Pharma had held a stake in Yapan Bio since 2021. The additional investment will bring Yapan Bio’s large molecule development and manufacturing capabilities further into Piramal Pharma Solutions (PPS), the company’s contract development and manufacturing organisation.
Peter DeYoung, CEO of Piramal Global Pharma, said: “This strategic investment doesn’t just fuel our long-term growth; it also puts Patient Centricity into action.”
Piramal said the acquisition will expand its ability to provide integrated biologics development and manufacturing services through its global CDMO network.
Expansion of biologics CDMO capabilities
Yapan Bio specialises in development and manufacturing services for vaccines and biologics, including GMP manufacturing for early clinical development.
The company provides capabilities covering process development and characterisation alongside manufacturing services, allowing it to support biologics programmes as they progress towards clinical development.
Piramal said bringing Yapan Bio into its subsidiary structure will allow the capabilities to be incorporated more closely into its broader large molecule service offering.
DeYoung added that integrating Yapan Bio’s expertise into Piramal’s network would support demand for complex biologics development and manufacturing services.
Yapan Bio supports ADC development
Yapan Bio also supports ADCelerate, Piramal Pharma Solutions’ platform for integrated Phase 1 antibody-drug conjugate development.
The acquisition will give PPS continued access to Yapan Bio’s biologics capabilities as it develops and manufactures ADC programmes.
Piramal Pharma Solutions provides development and manufacturing services across the drug lifecycle, with facilities in North America, Europe and Asia.
Its services include drug discovery, process and pharmaceutical development, clinical trial supplies, API manufacturing and finished dosage forms, alongside specialist capabilities covering highly potent APIs, antibody-drug conjugates, sterile fill/finish, peptides and biologics.
The acquisition further expands Piramal Pharma’s ownership of capabilities supporting biologics and vaccine development and manufacturing.
