Germfree and Nuvai add AI monitoring to IV compounding

Germfree and Nuvai Medical Technologies are partnering to integrate AI-powered aseptic technique monitoring into an IV compounding workspace used by hospital pharmacies.

AI monitoring for aseptic technique

The companies said Nuvai’s Aseptique platform will be integrated into Germfree’s Smarthood IV compounding workspace, using existing cameras to monitor aseptic technique in real time.

The technology is intended to give pharmacy teams greater visibility into how technicians handle sterile preparations, moving monitoring beyond periodic assessments and retrospective microbial testing.

Traditionally, pharmacies assess aseptic technique through scheduled competency evaluations and environmental or microbial monitoring. The companies said the integration could allow pharmacy teams to identify technique deviations as they occur and use the information to support ongoing training and quality improvement.

The system does not require additional camera hardware because it uses cameras already incorporated into the Smarthood workspace.

Judd Baker, vice president of healthcare at Germfree, said: “By combining Smarthood with Aseptique, we are extending the value of a platform our customers already trust.”

Baker added that the combined technology will provide pharmacy teams with actionable information about aseptic technique and support consistency in IV compounding.

Individual and pharmacy-wide monitoring

Under the integrated system, technicians will have access to individual dashboards showing aseptic technique deviations, while pharmacy leaders can view wider performance trends across their organisation.

The companies said this could help pharmacy departments identify recurring issues, support continuous improvement and reinforce aseptic handling practices.

For IV compounding, maintaining appropriate aseptic technique is critical because contamination during preparation can put patients at risk. Real-time monitoring therefore offers a different approach from systems that primarily assess the environment or evaluate technique retrospectively.

Stephen Eckel, founder and president of Nuvai Medical Technologies, said: “Aseptique uses machine learning to ensure that every compounded product is prepared sterilely.”

Eckel added that the collaboration with Germfree would help pharmacy departments use the technology to improve patient care by supporting the correct preparation of IV medications.

The partnership brings together Germfree’s compounding workspace with Nuvai’s machine learning-based monitoring technology. The companies said the integration is designed to strengthen oversight without requiring pharmacies to change their existing Smarthood hardware.

The development is particularly relevant as hospital pharmacies look for ways to improve oversight of sterile compounding and identify technique issues before they contribute to errors or contamination.

Rather than replacing established pharmacy quality processes, the integrated system is positioned as an additional monitoring layer that can provide more immediate information about aseptic technique.
