Opella has invested $70 million in a new Enterogermina production line in Mexico, expanding supply capacity for the Americas and strengthening regional manufacturing.

Opella has invested $70 million in a new production line for Enterogermina in Mexico, expanding manufacturing capacity and establishing the site as a regional hub serving markets across the Americas.

The new production line at Opella’s facility in Ocoyoacac will add annual capacity of 200 million mini-bottles. The investment is intended to strengthen supply resilience by increasing production capacity closer to the markets the company serves.

The Mexican facility will operate alongside Opella’s existing Enterogermina manufacturing site in Origgio, Italy, which will continue to serve as the company’s global Center of Excellence for the product.

Together, the two manufacturing sites are expected to support projected growth in demand for Enterogermina while maintaining existing production operations.

Rafik Amrane, chief supply chain officer at Opella, said: “This new production line in Mexico is a crucial step forward in our broader mission to build a highly resilient, global manufacturing network. By increasing our production capacity and being closer to the markets we serve, we are fundamentally changing how we deliver care, ensuring that our science-backed solutions are consistently available to the millions of families who rely on them.”

The highly automated production line is expected to progressively scale operations following qualification and regulatory approvals, with products expected to reach shelves across the Americas during 2027-2028.

The investment will also increase the proportion of Opella products sold in Mexico that are manufactured locally, from 60% to 80%.

Luis Soares, general manager of Opella in Mexico, said: “With this new production line, we are strengthening Mexico’s role as a strategic platform for advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing and exports to Latin America. It will also enable us to increase the share of Opella products sold in Mexico that are locally manufactured from 60% to 80%, combining stronger, sustainable local production with greater regional reach.”

The company said the investment forms part of its wider strategy to strengthen supply chain resilience and expand regional manufacturing capabilities.

The Ocoyoacac site operates using 100% renewable electrical energy and has reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by 80% since 2019. The facility also operates a zero-waste-to-landfill model.

The investment comes as the global probiotics market continues to grow, with Opella citing increasing consumer awareness of the relationship between gut microbiome health and overall wellbeing as a key driver.

Enterogermina is one of Opella’s leading probiotics and is used in digestive health. The company’s decision to expand production in Mexico is intended to increase supply capacity for the Americas while maintaining its established manufacturing operations in Italy.

The new production line is expected to become progressively operational between 2027 and 2028, following completion of the required qualification and regulatory approval processes.
