SGD Pharma reports emissions reduction and sustainable packaging progress

SGD Pharma has reported a 27% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions since 2022 as the pharmaceutical glass packaging manufacturer outlined progress against its sustainability targets in its latest corporate social responsibility report.

The company said investments in production electrification, renewable electricity and the removal of heavy fuel oil from manufacturing sites had contributed to lower emissions as it works towards a 42% reduction by 2030 under its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments.

The report also highlights continued recognition from sustainability assessors, with SGD Pharma retaining EcoVadis Platinum status for the second consecutive year. The company also received a CDP Climate A rating, a CDP Supplier Engagement A score and a CDP Water score of B.

Glass manufacturing remains one of the more energy-intensive parts of the pharmaceutical supply chain, with companies across the sector investing heavily in decarbonisation as customers seek lower-carbon packaging solutions.

Olivier Rousseau, chief executive officer of SGD Pharma, said: “Our sustainability strategy is now fully embedded in everything we do and it helps us create value for all our stakeholders: customers, employees, partners, communities, and shareholders.

“SGD Pharma is not only transforming its operations, but we are also helping shape the future of sustainable healthcare packaging.”

Alongside emissions reductions, SGD Pharma reported several operational milestones across its manufacturing network.

The company became the first glass manufacturer in China to achieve ISO 14021 certification for post-consumer recycled content at its Zhanjiang production site, supporting its strategy to increase circularity within pharmaceutical packaging.

It also reported improvements in water efficiency, with lower water withdrawal per tonne of glass produced, while strengthening its water stewardship programme under chief executive oversight.

Environmental initiatives extended beyond manufacturing, with the company reporting that 16,568 mangroves have been planted with partners in China since 2022 as part of a wider target to establish 100,000 mangroves by 2030.

The report also details progress across workforce engagement and corporate governance.

SGD Pharma said all employees participated in its global engagement survey during 2025, while manufacturing sites continued certification to ISO 45001. The company also introduced an updated third-party due diligence framework and expanded whistleblowing training across its global operations.

Supply chain sustainability also formed a significant part of the report.

According to SGD Pharma, all critical suppliers have signed its Supplier Code of Conduct, which aligns with United Nations Global Compact principles covering human rights, labour standards, environmental performance and business ethics.

The company added that 95% of critical suppliers were assessed through either EcoVadis ratings or internal sustainability questionnaires to evaluate environmental, social and governance performance.

Rousseau said: “Building a responsible value chain is essential to achieving meaningful, long-term impact. By working closely with our suppliers and raising expectations across the board, we are creating shared value while accelerating the transition to more sustainable healthcare packaging.”

SGD Pharma manufactures more than three billion pharmaceutical glass vials each year across five production sites worldwide. The company said it will continue investing in innovation and manufacturing improvements as it works towards its long-term environmental targets and supports pharmaceutical companies seeking more sustainable packaging throughout their supply chains.
